At Okov we took 100 items from eight searches, with a median of €24.40, because many of them are sets. Long hexagon Hoegert 1/2 inch sockets cost from €1.99 for 8 mm to €4.99 for 30 and 32 mm, and Unior from €3.79 to €10.99, while with a T-handle they cost €9.49 and €29.90. Sets cost €9.99 for a Total with 12 sockets of 1/4 inch, €16.99 and €19.99 for Total 3/8 and 1/2 inch, from €16.99 to €149.90 for Hoegert, from €29.90 to €149.90 for Neo, from €89.90 to €159.90 for Raxx, and the largest €239.90.

MTX 1/2 inch sockets cost from €1.25 to €4.49, another line from €0.99 to €2.69, Forch from €0.89 to €5.29, magnetic Makita from €2.39 to €3.09 and long Maurer+ from €4.49 to €11.90. Forch impact sockets cost from €4.05 to €26.90, and hexagon impact sockets from €2.79 to €8.90.
Forch hex, Torx and XZN bit sockets cost from €1.09 to €29.90. Sets cost from €8.69 for 16 sockets of 1/4 inch, Ingco from €8.90 to €159.00, MTX from €19.90 to €24.90, Makita from €30.49 to €52.90 and Forch from €109.00 to €359.00. Forch ratchets cost from €30.90 to €49.90, and torque wrenches €45.90 for Ingco, €54.90 for MTX and €89.00 for an Ingco from 40 to 200 Nm.
What a 13 mm socket costs
A 13 mm 1/2 inch socket costs €1.59 for MTX, €1.89 for Forch and €1.99 at KIPS, €2.49 for a long Hoegert at Okov, €3.09 for a magnetic Makita and €4.49 for a long Maurer+. A 13 mm Forch impact socket costs €4.05 short and €6.99 long. For a cordless impact driver buy impact sockets, because ordinary ones can crack under the blows.
Which set to choose
For the home and a bike a 1/4 inch set with 4 to 14 mm sockets and a ratchet is enough, and for a car a 1/2 inch set from 10 to 24 mm or a combined 1/4 and 1/2 inch set. A six-point socket fits the bolt better than a twelve-point one and rounds the corners less, and a deep socket reaches nuts on long bolts. A 72-tooth ratchet turns even in a cramped space.
A torque wrench is used to tighten a bolt exactly as much as the manufacturer requires, for example wheels, a cylinder head or carbon bike parts. After use set it back to the lowest value so the spring does not lose accuracy. Do not use a torque wrench to undo seized bolts.

What EU rules say about rubber tool handles
Commission Regulation (EU) No 1272/2013 amends Annex XVII to the REACH Regulation in Article 1, and under the Annex products for the general public must not have rubber or plastic parts in contact with the skin containing more than 1 mg/kg of any of the eight listed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Among the examples the Annex explicitly names tools for domestic use.
For toys the limit is 0.5 mg/kg, and under Article 2 the rules apply from 27 December 2015. Montenegro is not an EU member, but tools from well-known brands that are also sold in the EU must meet this limit, and handles that smell strongly of rubber or leave a black mark on the hand are better avoided.

- Profile: six-point for tight bolts.
- Material: chrome-vanadium for hand use, chrome-molybdenum for impact use.
- Ratchet: number of teeth and direction switch.
- Case: marked slots so sockets do not get lost.

We copied prices from Okov and KIPS on the day of the check; the medians are ours. We did not count cordless and pneumatic ratchets, nut setters for drills or special sockets for alternators, lambda sensors and wheels. Type and size were taken from product names. We did not measure hardness or the hydrocarbon content of the handles.
