Snow chains in Montenegro: prices of 9 mm chains, 4x4 chains and snow socks at Okov and KIPS, winter equipment from 15 November and fines (2026)

On 28 September 2026 snow chains at Okov cost from €19.90 to €44.80, with a median of €26.90 across 19 chains for passenger cars, and chains for 4x4 vehicles from €59.90 to €69.90. At KIPS, MI3 chains cost €23.99 each, and textile chains in a set of two €26.90. Under the Law on Road Traffic Safety, from 15 November to 30 March a vehicle must have winter equipment.

What people search for and when

In Google Trends for Montenegro over the last 12 months, the term lanci (chains), compared with usisivac (vacuum cleaner), averaged 2. It peaked at 36 in the week from 16 November 2025, then 24 a week later and 23 in the week from 4 January 2026, with values of 1 and 3 in September 2026. So chains are bought with the first snow, not earlier.

On 28 September 2026 Google completed lanci za snijeg (snow chains) with cijena (price), crna gora (Montenegro), okov, podgorica, banja luka and pevex, and lanci za sneg (snow chains) with cena (price), tabela (chart), kupujemprodajem, uradi sam (do it yourself) and dimenzije (dimensions). So people search for the price, the shop and the size chart.

Chains at Okov

At Okov the first page of the search for lanci za snijeg had 28 chains. The cheapest are the Alpin TUV/GS 30 and 40 at 9 mm and the Finish Line 20 at 9 mm at €19.90 each, then 12 mm chains at €20.60 and €23.90. SkyCar KNS 9 mm chains cost from €24.90 to €28.90, and Amio KNS with the O-Norm marking at 9 mm from €29.90 to €34.90. The Italian Maggi Catene 50 and 65 cost €44.80 each.

For 4x4 vehicles Okov sells 16 mm chains. Amio KB cost €59.90 and €69.90, and SkyCar KB from €65 to €69.49. Amio O-Norm textile snow socks in sizes M and L cost €27.90 for two. The median of the 19 chains for passenger cars is €26.90, and of the nine chains for 4x4 €69.49.

Chains at KIPS and on Ananas

At KIPS the search for lanci za snijeg returned 21 results, of which seven MI3 chains in sizes KN50 to KN110, all at €23.99, and five sets of MI3 textile chains in sizes S to XXL, at €26.90 for two. The rest were chains sold by the metre and a garden hose.

On Ananas the search for lanci za snijeg returned no results, and lanci za sneg only wire rope clamps. In Montenegro you therefore buy snow chains at hardware stores and car shops.

How to choose the size

The number in the name, for example KNS-70 or KN70, marks the chain size, not the price. You choose the size by the tyre dimension, written on the tyre sidewall, and by the maker's chart on the pack, which is why people search for lanci za sneg tabela (snow chain chart). 9 mm chains are thinner and easier to fit, 12 mm are stronger, and 16 mm are for 4x4 and heavier vehicles.

Textile socks go on faster and do not damage the rims, but they are for occasional driving on snow. Before the trip, practise fitting them at home, because on an icy road fitting takes longer. Keep gloves, a torch and a kneeling mat in the boot too, because chains are usually fitted in the dark and cold, at the roadside. What the law requires

Under the Law on Road Traffic Safety, Article 132, a vehicle in traffic in the winter period, from 15 November to 30 March, must have the winter equipment prescribed by a separate act. When there is snow or ice on the road, the driver must also use that equipment. What exactly counts as winter equipment is set by the act under Article 242, so before the trip check which equipment your vehicle must have.

The penalty provisions of the same law set a fine of €60 to €150 for a driver whose vehicle has no winter equipment in the winter period, and €80 to €300 for a driver who does not use it when there is snow or ice on the road. What to check before buying

1. The tyre dimension and the size chart on the pack.
2. The thickness: 9 mm for passenger cars, 16 mm for 4x4.
3. The standard marking on the pack, for example O-Norm or TUV/GS.
4. Fitting: practise it at home, with gloves.
5. The winter period: from 15 November to 30 March a vehicle must have winter equipment.

How we measured and what we did not measure

We copied prices from Okov and KIPS on the day we read them; the medians are ours. At Okov we read the first page of the search, and from the KIPS results we removed chains sold by the metre and the garden hose. We did not check which tyre dimensions each chain covers, nor did we measure chain durability.
