Metal bits have a median of €4.90: 2 and 2.5 mm Bosch HSS bits in a pack of 2 cost €0.85 and €0.89, Bosch Pro HSS-G from €1.39, 12 and 13 mm Alpen HSS cobalt bits €28.90 and €36.90, and step drills €24.90 for Total and €49.90 for Wolfcraft. 3 and 4 mm twist wood bits cost €1.00, Alpen from €1.49, 18 and 20 mm Lewis bits €13.49 and €14.99, and 35 mm hinge boring bits €13.49 for Wolfcraft and €21.90 for DeWalt.
Bosch tile bits cost from €5.49 for a 5 mm Ceramic to €19.99 for a 12 mm HEX-9 for hard tiles, and Alpen masonry bits from €2.99 for 4 mm to €6.99 for 10 x 200 mm. SDS-plus bits have a median of €6.05, from €2.20 for Keil to €20.90 for a 14 x 460 mm Bosch, SDS-max bits cost €99.90 for a 35 mm Alpen and €179.01 for a 55 mm Bosch breakthrough bit, and sets from €9.99 for a 16-piece Total to €129.00 for a 25-piece Keil HSS E-co.
Drill bits at KIPS
At KIPS we took 349 bits and sets from nine searches. Makita metal bits cost from €0.55 for 2.25 mm to €21.90 for 16 mm, with a median of €3.29, and wood bits from €0.89 for 3 and 4 mm to €18.49 for 22 x 450 mm. 3 to 8 mm MTX ceramic bits cost from €1.19 to €1.99, glass bits from €3.59 to €4.90, and straight-shank masonry bits from €1.10 for 4 mm to €41.90 for a 20 x 450 mm Nemesis.
SDS-plus bits cost from €1.79 to €55.90 for a 24 x 450 mm Nemesis, with a median of €6.85, and SDS-max from €14.49 for 14 mm to €249.90 for 50 x 570 mm, with a median of €34.45. Makita multi-purpose bits cost from €1.95 to €5.49, and sets from €2.49 for an 8-piece Ingco set to €199.00 for a 200-piece set of bits and screwdriver bits.
Which bit to choose
An HSS bit is for metal and wood, and a cobalt HSS-Co bit for stainless and harder steel. For wood, bits with a centre point are best, as they do not wander and leave a clean hole, and a 35 mm bit is used for kitchen door hinges. For concrete and brick in an ordinary hammer drill you use a straight-shank bit with a carbide tip, and in a rotary hammer SDS-plus or, for larger diameters and thick walls, SDS-max.
For ceramic tiles without hammer action you use a spear-point bit, and for granite and hard tiles a dearer carbide or diamond bit. Multi-purpose bits drill concrete, tiles, wood and metal, so they are handy for occasional drilling. What EU conflict minerals rules mean for drill bits
The tips on masonry bits and solid carbide bits are made of tungsten carbide. Regulation (EU) 2017/821 introduces in Article 1 supply chain due diligence obligations for Union importers of minerals and metals containing tin, tantalum, tungsten or gold listed in Annex I, and under Article 20 these obligations apply from 1 January 2021.
Annex I sets thresholds, for example 250 000 kg a year for tungsten ores and concentrates. The regulation does not apply to finished drill bits but to importers of ores and metals, and Montenegro is not an EU member; still, large EU drill bit makers source tungsten through a supply chain to which these rules apply.

We did not count core and pilot bits, auger bits for motor earth drills, adapters, sharpeners and self-drilling screws, and at Okov and KIPS we took only the first page of results. We did not measure bit life.
