At Okov we took 67 chisels and sets from several searches; the median is €12.49. Hoegert wood chisels from 8 to 25 mm cost from €4.49 to €4.89, and Stanley FatMax with a metal strike cap from €17.10 to €19.99. Unior hand chisels for metal from 150 to 250 mm cost from €5.49 to €8.49, a Stanley Cold €5.50, W.best flat and pointed 250 mm ones €5.99 each, and Unior with a rubber guard €11.99 and €12.49.
SDS-plus chisels cost from €5.04 to €18.99: Hitachi €6.49 each, Keil from €6.90 to €12.50 and Alpen Demolisher from €13.99 to €18.99. SDS-max chisels cost from €7.90 for a 280 mm Hitachi point to €54.90 for DeWalt and Keil, and 80 mm wide ones €27.50 each. At KIPS we took 64 chisels and sets from six searches; the median is €6.49. Ingco wood chisels from 6 to 25 mm cost from €3.79 to €4.99, and MTX from 8 to 32 mm from €4.89 to €6.59. Hand points with a guard cost €3.39 and €4.89, a 250 mm Maurer €6.29, and 305 mm hand chisels €5.49 and €6.99.
SDS-plus chisels cost from €2.69 for MTX and €2.89 for Ingco to €25.90 for a 40 mm wide Makita. SDS-max chisels cost from €4.90 for an Ingco point, through €8.99 for 400 mm Makita ones, to €37.90 for a channel chisel and €71.90 for a spade, and HEX ones from €3.99 for Ingco to €59.90 for Makita. Sets cost from €7.49 for four chisels from 6 to 24 mm to €69.90 for four Ingco HEX chisels.
Which chisel for which job
A wood chisel is for cutting recesses for hinges and locks and is struck with a wooden or rubber mallet, not a steel hammer, except for chisels with a metal strike cap. A hand chisel and point for concrete are struck with a hammer and are enough for small openings and removing the odd tile.
For chasing channels for cables and pipes and removing tiles from a whole wall you need a rotary hammer with a chiselling function and SDS-plus chisels, and for demolition and thick walls a heavier hammer with an SDS-max or HEX chisel. A flat chisel removes tiles and plaster, a point breaks concrete and stone, a wide flat chisel and a spade remove tiles and adhesive, and a channel chisel cuts grooves for installations. Self-sharpening chisels stay sharp longer and jam less.

How to work safely
When chasing and breaking tiles wear safety glasses, gloves and a mask, because fragments of tile and concrete fly, and concrete dust contains quartz. Before chasing a wall, check where cables and pipes run and switch off the power on that circuit. A chisel whose head has mushroomed from blows should be ground or replaced, because sharp fragments break off it.
A blunt chisel can be sharpened, but do not overheat it on the grinder, because the hardened tip then loses its hardness. Grease the end of an SDS chisel that goes into the drill with chisel grease, so that the holder wears less.
What EU rules require on a construction site
Council Directive 92/57/EEC of 24 June 1992 on minimum safety and health requirements at temporary or mobile construction sites requires in Article 3 that the client or project supervisor appoint one or more safety and health coordinators for any construction site on which more than one contractor is present. Before the site is set up there must be a safety and health plan.
If work lasts longer than 30 working days and more than 20 workers are occupied simultaneously, or the volume of work exceeds 500 person-days, a prior notice is sent to the competent authorities before work starts, and it must be clearly displayed on the site. Montenegro is not an EU member, but when several crews work on a flat renovation it is good to agree in advance who is responsible for safety and order.
