Electrode inverters cost €179.90 for a Total from 15 to 200 A, €199 for the Stanley WD160IC1, €249 for the Stanley WD200IC2, €279 for the Telwin Infinity Force 170 and €349 for the Telwin Tecnica 171/S in a case. The Telwin Technology 186 XT costs €459, and the 238 XT with a display €559.

The combined Stanley Multi 200 for MIG, MMA and TIG costs €599, the Telwin Maxima 190 Synergic €649 and the Maxima 230 €890, and the Technomig 210 €849 and the 260 €1,290. On Ananas the search for aparat za zavarivanje returned 17 machines. Bormann electrode inverters cost €75.50 for 140 A, €134 for 170 A, €175 for 200 A, €179 for 160 A and €199 for 250 A, and Emtop from €88 to €391.20. The Fieldmann FDIS 20140-E costs €119.99, the Villager VIWM 175 €165, Bormann combined MIG, MMA and TIG machines €195 for 150 A and €382.50 for 200 A, and one with a plasma cutter €785.

Which machine to choose

An electrode (MMA) inverter is the cheapest, light and enough for a fence, a gate and repairs outdoors, because wind does not disturb it. A CO2 or MIG welder makes welding with wire under shielding gas easier and neater, so it suits thinner sheet metal and repeated work, but it needs a cylinder and wire. TIG is for precise welds, stainless steel and aluminium, and takes more practice.

For a home workshop look at a current of around 160 to 200 A and the duty cycle, that is how long the machine runs without a break, not just the maximum current. What the EU says about optical radiation from welding

In Article 1, Directive 2006/25/EC on artificial optical radiation protects workers from the adverse effects of such radiation on the eyes and skin, and in Article 2(a) it defines optical radiation as electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength from 100 nm to 1 mm. Under Article 5 the risk must be eliminated or reduced to a minimum, and where limit values could be exceeded, the employer draws up an action plan, including other working methods, equipment that emits less radiation and shielding.

Montenegro is not an EU member, but a welding arc emits strong ultraviolet light, so without a mask with suitable shading your eyes can be harmed even by a short look. Wear a mask, gloves and cotton or leather clothing covering your arms and neck, and keep household members and children away or put up a screen.

How we measured and what we did not measure

We copied prices from Okov, KIPS and Ananas on the day we read them, with the pre-discount price where shown; the medians are ours. At Okov we removed plasma cutters, a car body spotter and couplings, and showed PPR pipe welders separately; at KIPS we removed household appliances the search returned, and on Ananas electrodes, wire, clamps, masks and a stand. We did not measure weld quality.
