Which sander to choose
An orbital sander has a rectangular pad that reaches into corners, so it suits flat surfaces, doors and fine sanding before painting. A random orbit sander has a round pad that both spins and oscillates, removes material faster and leaves no swirl marks, so it is better for old paint, varnish and larger areas. A triangular, or delta, sander is for corners and profiles, and for parquet, concrete and walls there are special machines you hire or that a tradesperson brings.
Look for a hook-and-loop pad, because such paper is easier to find, and a vacuum connection, because a dust bag catches only part of the dust. What IARC says about wood dust
In 2012 the International Agency for Research on Cancer of the World Health Organization published volume 100C of its monographs, devoted to agents previously classified in Group 1, carcinogenic to humans. Alongside arsenic, asbestos and crystalline silica, they include wood dust and leather dust.
Sanding raises the finest dust of any woodworking job. Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated place, connect a vacuum to the sander, wear a dust mask and goggles, and afterwards collect the dust with a vacuum, not a broom. Be especially careful with old paint whose composition you do not know, and do not sand it in a closed room where children spend time.
