On 30 September 2026 a 4x5 m protective sheet for painting costs from €0.99 for 7-micron Schuller and Ciret sheets to €4.49 for a 50-micron Schuller sheet at Okov, with a median of €1.92 across 8 packs from two shops. A square metre of thin sheeting works out at €0.04 to €0.32, with a median of €0.08, masking film with crepe tape costs from €1.79 to €2.99, 4 m wide PE sheeting from €1.79 to €3.10 per metre, and tarps from €1.79 to €64.00, with a median of €13.99. In total we compared 44 items: 21 at Okov and 23 at KIPS.
The drop sheet is the cheapest part of painting, but it decides whether you will be scrubbing the floor and furniture afterwards. Sheets at Okov
At Okov a 4x5 m Schuller protective sheet costs €0.99 at 7 microns, €1.69 at 10, €2.99 at 30 and €4.49 at 50 microns, and a 2x50 m roll €5.39, which is about €0.05 per m². Washi Core masking film with crepe tape costs €1.79 for 55 cm x 33 m, €2.69 for 110 cm x 33 m and €2.99 for 270 cm x 16 m.
Building sheeting 4 m wide and 110 microns thick costs €1.79 per metre, and clear 150-micron PE sheeting €3.10 per metre. Protective paper of 100 cm x 20 m costs €6.49, about €0.32 per m². Protective tarps with metal eyelets cost from €4.29 for 2x3 m to €64.00 for 6x8 m at 180 g/m².
Sheets at KIPS
At KIPS a Ciret protective sheet costs €0.69 for 4x4 m at 4 microns, and at 4x5 m €0.99 at 7, €1.49 at 10, €2.15 at 18 and €3.70 at 30 microns. A protective sheet of recycled material of 4x25 m, or 100 m², costs €31.86.
Clear PE sheeting 4 m x 0.15 mm costs €3.08 per metre, and green recycled sheeting €2.21. Tarps of 120 g/m² cost from €5.99 for 2x3 m to €16.99 for 4x6 m, and Fortstorm tarps were on sale, from €1.79 for 2x3 m at 80 g/m² to €46.00 for 8x10 m at 150 g/m², instead of €57.50.
What protecting a room costs
For the floor of a 16 m² room one 4x5 m sheet is enough, so protecting the floor with thin sheeting costs from €0.99 to €4.49. The same 7-micron sheet costs €0.99 in both shops, while at 10 microns it is €1.49 at KIPS and €1.69 at Okov, and at 30 microns €2.99 at Okov and €3.70 at KIPS.
Masking film with crepe tape works out at €0.07 to €0.10 per m², because the tape sticks along the edge of the wall or window and the film is pulled over the surface. A tarp costs from €0.29 to €1.33 per m² and pays off if you use it several times, for example for scaffolding or the yard.
Which thickness to choose
Sheeting of 4 to 10 microns is enough to cover furniture, windows and walls, but it tears easily under feet and ladders. For the floor a sheet of 30 to 50 microns or protective paper is better, as it does not slip and absorbs drops, and for rough work such as skimming and sanding building sheeting or a tarp.

What the EU measures in microns for thin plastic bags
Directive (EU) 2015/720 amends Directive 94/62/EC on packaging and, under Article 1, introduces the lightweight plastic carrier bag, with a wall thinner than 50 microns, and the very lightweight plastic carrier bag, with a wall thinner than 15 microns. Member States must reduce consumption of lightweight bags to no more than 90 per person a year by 31 December 2019 and 40 by 31 December 2025, or ensure that from 31 December 2018 they are not free of charge.
A painting sheet is not a bag and these rules do not apply to it, and Montenegro is not an EU member. Still, the same measures show how thin a 7-micron sheet is: it is thinner than a very lightweight bag, so it is hard to use twice and usually ends up as waste. A thicker sheet or tarp that you use several times produces less waste.

How we measured and what we did not
We copied prices from Okov and KIPS on the day of the check, and we checked the unit, piece or metre, on the product page. We calculated the price per m² and the medians ourselves from the dimensions on the pack. We did not count trimmer line, decorative and self-adhesive film, food, glass and phone film, vapour barriers, stretch film and covers for cars, motorbikes and bicycles, and at Okov and KIPS we took only the first page of results. We did not measure how long a sheet lasts or how much paint it lets through.
