Sandpaper on a roll costs from €0.30 to €3.29 per metre, with a median of €0.89, sanding sponges have a median of €0.99, sanding belts €3.48 per piece and flap discs for grinders €2.30.

At Okov we took 73 items from ten searches. Sandpaper on a roll is sold by the metre: a 115 mm Graphite in grit 40 costs €0.30, 115 mm Klingspor PS33 from €0.60 to €0.70, PS22N €0.99 and €1.80, and 200 mm PS19E €1.60 and €1.85. A Total set of 50 sheets costs €6.99 in the 145 x 114 mm format and €9.99 for 125 mm discs, or €0.14 and €0.20 per sheet.
Graphite 150 mm hook-and-loop discs in a pack of 5 cost €1.59, single Bosch hook-and-loop discs from €0.90 to €1.19, 225 mm Flex drywall sander discs €1.69 and €1.89, and 225 mm Bosch mesh €1.99 each and €44.90 and €45.00 for 25. Sanding sponges cost from €0.85 to €4.99, and a Wolfcraft diamond one €21.30. Raxx sanding belts in packs of 3 cost from €3.49 to €8.00, and Tyrolit flap discs from €1.80 to €3.59.
Sandpaper at KIPS
At KIPS we took 102 items from eight searches. 12 cm wide Smirdex paper on a roll costs from €0.89 to €1.12 per metre, and 120 mm Saint-Gobain from €2.79 to €3.29 per metre. Ingco sets of 50 sheets cost from €5.99 to €8.99, MTX packs of 5 and 10 discs €1.09 and €1.89, and Makita packs of 10 sheets from €2.99 to €6.49, or from €0.30 to €0.65 per sheet.
A 230 x 280 mm Saint-Gobain sheet costs €1.49, and a 225 mm mesh for a wall sander €1.19. Ciret sanding sponges cost from €0.69 to €0.99, and Smirdex €1.04. Makita sanding belts cost €5.79 for 5 narrow belts, €4.29 and €4.39 for a 533 x 30 mm belt and €11.89 and €12.29 for a 610 x 100 mm belt, and Makita flap discs €1.59 each.
Which grit to choose
The number on the paper is the grit: a lower number means a coarser grain. Grit 40 to 60 removes old paint, varnish and unevenness, 80 to 120 is for the main sanding of wood, 150 to 240 for fine sanding before painting or varnishing, and 320 and above for between coats of varnish and polishing. Skim coat and plaster are sanded with paper or mesh from 120 to 220, because a coarser grain leaves scratches that show under paint.
Sand in steps, without skipping more than one grit step, and always along the wood grain. What one sheet costs
Large sets are the cheapest: 50 Ingco or Total sheets work out at €0.12 to €0.20 per sheet. MTX packs of 5 and 10 discs cost about €0.19 to €0.22 per disc, Makita from €0.30 to €0.65, and single discs and sheets from €0.60 to €4.55. Dearer paper usually cuts longer and clogs less, so for a bigger job the difference in price per sheet is not decisive.
What EU rules say about paint strippers
Instead of sanding, old paint can also be removed with a chemical stripper. Decision No 455/2009/EC added to Directive 76/769/EEC a restriction on paint strippers containing dichloromethane in a concentration of 0.1 % by weight or more: they could not be placed on the market for the first time for the general public and professionals after 6 December 2010, placed on the market at all after 6 December 2011, and professionals could not use them after 6 June 2012.
Member States may allow such strippers to be used only by specifically trained professionals. Montenegro is not an EU member, so check the composition on the paint stripper's packaging; if it contains dichloromethane, work outdoors or choose sanding or a stripper without dichloromethane.

- Holes: matching the holes on the sander.
- Fixing: hook-and-loop or clamp.
- Price per sheet: divide the pack price by the number of sheets.
How we measured and what we did not
We copied prices from Okov and KIPS on the day of the check; we calculated the price per sheet and the medians ourselves from the pack price, and we checked on the product page that the Okov roll price is per metre. We did not count grinding and diamond wheels, paper holders and backing pads, sanding drums, felt, fibre and nylon discs, and at Okov and KIPS we took only the first page of results. We did not measure how long the paper cuts.
