What the markings on a lock mean

The key dimension of a mortise lock is the distance from the faceplate to the axis of the key or cylinder, which AGB marks as E40 or E50, meaning 40 or 50 mm. On interior locks the faceplate is most often 18 mm wide, and the handle goes into a spindle of 8 or 9 mm. Key, cylinder and WC locks share the same case but have different openings, so they cannot replace one another.

How to measure the old lock

Before buying, take out the old lock and measure the distance to the axis, the height and width of the faceplate and the gap between the handle and the key. If the dimensions do not match, the tradesperson has to widen or fill the pocket in the door, which takes longer than the swap itself. What the EU requires of smart locks

Regulation (EU) 2024/2847, the Cyber Resilience Act, sets requirements for products with digital elements. Under Annex III, smart home products with security functions, including smart door locks, are important products of class I, which are subject to a stricter conformity assessment.

Under Article 71, the Regulation applies from 11 December 2027, and the obligations to report actively exploited vulnerabilities under Article 14 from 11 September 2026.
