At Okov we took 10 lubricating and maintenance sprays from ten searches. 200 ml WD-40 costs €4.19 and 400 ml €6.99, while a 400 ml Sonax SX90 Plus costs €7.99. Presto sprays cost €4.99 for a 400 ml contact spray and for white spray grease, and €5.99 for a chain spray.
A 300 ml Sonax bicycle chain spray costs €7.99, a 100 ml one for e-bike chains €8.49, and a 200 ml Volpi chain spray €12.90. A 300 ml degreaser spray costs €12.50.
Sprays at KIPS
At KIPS we took 12 sprays from ten searches. WD-40 costs €4.29 for 200 ml, €6.90 for 400 ml and €8.39 for 420 ml, and a 250 ml WD-40 chain maintenance spray €9.99. A 400 ml Maurer penetrating spray costs €3.99, Saratoga €3.89, and Arexons Svitol €4.49 for 200 ml and €7.29 for 400 ml.

What 100 ml costs
The cheapest multi-purpose sprays, 400 ml Maurer and 400 ml WD-40, work out at €1.00 to about €1.75 per 100 ml, and 200 ml WD-40 at about €2.10 per 100 ml. Chain sprays are the dearest: from €2.66 to €8.49 per 100 ml, and the small 100 ml Sonax e-bike chain spray is the dearest per millilitre. A larger can only pays off if you use the spray often, because the valve sometimes clogs before the can is used up.
Which spray to choose
WD-40 and similar penetrating sprays soak into rust, displace moisture and clean, but lubricate weakly and briefly. For hinges and sliding parts spray grease or silicone spray, which stay on the surface, is better, and for bicycle and motorbike chains a dedicated chain spray that does not fling off while riding. For a lock cylinder do not use grease that collects dust, but a dry lubricant or a spray recommended by the lock maker.

What the EU Ecolabel says about lubricants that end up in nature
Commission Decision (EU) 2018/1702 sets the EU Ecolabel criteria for lubricants. Under Article 1, the product group covers total loss lubricants, such as chainsaw oils and total loss greases, partial loss lubricants and accidental loss lubricants, and under Article 2 "total loss" means that the lubricant is fully released to the environment during use.
Under Article 4 of the consolidated version of 20 December 2024, the criteria are valid until 31 December 2028. Montenegro is not an EU member, but chainsaw chain oil and bicycle chain spray end up in soil and water, so for the garden and nature a lubricant with the EU Ecolabel is better.

- Purpose: loosening, lubricating, chain or contacts.
- Volume: 100, 200 or 400 ml and the price per 100 ml.
- Straw: for precise application into a lock or hinge.
- Base: mineral oil, silicone, PTFE or grease.
- Markings: flammability and warnings on the can.
How we measured and what we did not
We copied prices from Okov and KIPS on the day of the check; we calculated the price per 100 ml and the medians ourselves from the volume on the pack. We did not count spray paints and lacquers, cleaning sprays, car care, PU foam and lubricants in tins, and at Okov and KIPS we took only the first page of results. The sample of sprays is small, so the medians by type should be read as a guide. We did not measure how long lubrication lasts.
