Hinges at Okov

At Okov we took 56 hinges from seven searches. GTV concealed hinges with soft close cost from €0.55 to €3.49, black Silento PRO from €1.69 to €1.79, and Hettich Sensys €3.29. For interior doors the IBFM art. 550 hinge of 100x76 mm costs €3.99 and €4.49 a pair, the stainless 970 €14.69 a pair, and Eclipse concealed door hinges €10.49 and €10.90 each.

Adjustable hinges for security doors with a 22 mm pin cost €9.90, a gate hinge with a 30 mm pin €11.90, and a 120x20 mm weld-on hinge rated up to 60 kg €0.99. Shower cabin hinges cost from €4.49 for a set to €18.90 for a spring hinge, and Amig brass furniture hinges were on sale, from €0.81 to €1.48.

Hinges at KIPS

At KIPS we took 80 hinges. Hranipex concealed hinges cost from €0.29 for a set with mounting plate to €2.65 for a 155-degree full overlay hinge, and with soft close from €0.89. Samet hinges cost from €0.39, Blum Clip 100 from €1.65 to €1.89, and a Clip top for Aventos €4.95.

Butt hinges of 100x75 mm cost €1.59 in stainless steel and €1.90 in black, and adjustable door hinges €6.40 for 65 kg and €7.45 for 75 kg. Weld-on hinges cost from €0.68 for a 12 mm pin and 100 kg to €6.73 for a 22 mm teardrop hinge, a weld-on hinge rated for 350 kg €8.05, and the lower and upper gate hinges with a 65 mm pin €26.33 and €33.87.

What the hardware for a kitchen costs

A kitchen with 10 doors and 2 concealed hinges each needs 20 hinges. With a Hranipex soft-close hinge at €0.89 that is €17.80, and with Hettich Sensys at €3.29 €65.80. The cheapest set hinge at €0.29 comes to €5.80, but without soft close.

Interior doors usually take 2 or 3 hinges: a pair of IBFM art. 550 costs €3.99, and a pair of stainless 970 €14.69. Gate hinges are the dearest because they carry from 100 to 350 kg, so they are chosen by the weight of the leaf, not by price.

How to choose a hinge

With a concealed hinge the position of the door decides: full overlay is for a door that covers the whole side panel, half overlay for two doors on the same panel, and inset for a door inside the carcass. The standard cup has a 35 mm diameter, the opening angle is usually 90 to 110 degrees, and for corner units there are 155 and 165-degree hinges. Soft close shuts the door quietly and protects the carcass.

What the EU says about the chromium trioxide used to chrome-plate hardware

Regulation (EU) No 348/2013 amended Annex XIV to the REACH Regulation, the list of substances whose use requires authorisation. Under entry 16 of the Annex, chromium trioxide is classified as carcinogenic category 1A and mutagenic category 1B, the latest application date was 21 March 2016, and the sunset date after which it may not be used without authorisation is 21 September 2017.

Chromium trioxide is used to chrome-plate metal, including hardware, and the rule applies to its use in production, not to the finished hinge. Montenegro is not an EU member, but chrome-plated hinges made in the EU are plated in plants that must hold an authorisation for chromium trioxide.

We calculated the price per piece and the medians ourselves, dividing the price of a pair by 2. We did not count mounting plates, dampers, washers, drill bits and toilet seat hinges, and at Okov and KIPS we took only the first page of results. We did not measure the load capacity or durability of the hinges.
