Which cutter to choose
A manual cutter scores the glaze with a wheel and snaps the tile, so it is fast, quiet and dust-free, and enough for straight cuts in wall and floor ceramics. The cutter should be longer than the diagonal of the largest tile, because tiles are often cut diagonally, so for 60 cm tiles you need a cutter of at least 85 cm, and for large formats one of 120 cm or longer. Cheap cutters have a shorter guide and a weaker breaker, so they snap thick porcelain unevenly.
An electric saw with a diamond blade and water cuts porcelain, stone and narrow strips that a manual cutter cannot, and makes mitre cuts too. For cut-outs for sockets and pipes use core bits, and for occasional odd cuts an angle grinder with a ceramic disc. What the EU requires of employers for work equipment
In Article 3(1), Directive 2009/104/EC on the use of work equipment requires the employer to provide work equipment that is suitable for the job and can be used by workers without impairment to their safety or health, taking into account the working conditions and hazards at the workplace, and in paragraph 2 to minimise the risk where it cannot be fully removed. Article 8 requires workers to have adequate information and, where appropriate, written instructions on the conditions of use of the equipment and foreseeable abnormal situations.
