So people look for silicone that does not go mouldy, coloured silicone, a small pack and how long it takes to dry.

Silicone at Okov

At Okov the first page of the search for silikon had seven 280 ml Soudal sanitary silicones. The clear sanitary one costs €3.99, Soudal Stop mould in white and clear €4.29, and in beige, grey, black and Manhattan grey €4.49 each. Akfix 100E universal costs €2.79, clear and white universal €3.79 each, and black, grey and brown €3.99 each.

Acrylic sealant costs €1.69 for 310 ml Akfix AS606, €2.19 for Soudal and €2.49 for Soudal Acryrub. Manual caulking guns cost from €3.39 for a Schuller with a toothed rod to €14.99 for the Schuller Marathon Flex, and an Einhell cordless gun without battery €119. Ghidini silicone spatulas cost €6.69 and €10.99.

Silicone at KIPS and on Ananas

At KIPS the search for silikon returned 133 results, of which four sanitary silicones: TKK 280 ml at €3.72 clear and €3.99 white, and 300 ml Sika Sikaseal-175 at €5.26 each. Acetoxy universal silicone costs from €3.49 for TKK to €4.38, Sika acetoxy €4.20, and Würth K+D 310 ml €10.85 each. Sikaflex 11FC, a polyurethane sealant, costs €13.71, and acrylic sealant from €1.49 for TKK to €3.70.

Ciret manual guns cost from €3.85 to €7.95, a 600 ml sausage gun €24.79, and Makita cordless guns from €224.90 to €249.90. On Ananas the search for silikon sanitarni returned one offer, Somafix 280 ml at €4.52.

How to replace bathroom silicone

For the bath, shower and basin use sanitary silicone, because it contains an anti-mould agent and withstands constant moisture. Acrylic sealant can be painted and is good for cracks in the wall, but it does not withstand constant contact with water. Acetoxy silicone smells of vinegar and does not suit marble and natural stone, while neutral silicone is better for stone and mirrors.

Cut out the old silicone with a scalpel, remove residue with a silicone remover or alcohol, and dry the joint well. Clean any mould under the old silicone and let it dry, otherwise it soon comes through the new one. Fill the bath with water before sealing, so the joint does not stretch when the bath is full. Stick masking tape on both sides of the joint, apply the silicone in one stroke, smooth it with a spatula or a finger dipped in water with detergent and remove the tape straight away. Do not use the shower until the silicone is fully cured; the time is on the cartridge.

What the EU requires for products with an anti-mould agent

In Article 58, Regulation (EU) No 528/2012 on biocidal products provides that a treated article for which the manufacturer claims a biocidal property, for example that it prevents mould, must carry on its label a statement that it incorporates biocidal products, the names of all active substances and instructions with precautions. The supplier must give a consumer, on request, free of charge and within 45 days, information on the biocidal treatment.

Montenegro is not an EU member, but on an anti-mould silicone cartridge look for the name of the active substance and the instructions. An anti-mould agent slows mould growth but does not replace ventilating the bathroom.

How we measured and what we did not measure

We copied prices from Okov, KIPS and Ananas on the day we read them; because of the small number of sanitary silicones per shop we did not calculate medians. At Okov we read the first page of the search, and from the 133 results at KIPS we picked out sanitary, universal and acrylic sealants and guns, without construction adhesives and parquet silicone. We did not measure how fast silicone cures or how long it resists mould.
