Tilers: Price per m² in Montenegro — What Is Known and What Is Not

The query exists, and it is a local one: on 24.09.2026 the first suggestion for "postavljanje pločica cijena" (tiling price) was "postavljanje pločica cijena crna gora" (tiling price Montenegro), and "keramicar podgorica" (tiler Podgorica) continues with "keramicar podgorica cijena" (tiler Podgorica price).

Published prices: there are none. We searched Montenegrin price lists and did not find a single one that publishes tiling work per m², even though two public price lists exist for painting. So this article does not invent a number; it says what is reliably known, what is only a benchmark, and how to get a quote for your own flat that you can compare.

What is published in Montenegro, and what is not

For orientation: portals in neighbouring Croatia publish €15–25/m² for standard tiling and €5–15/m² for preparing the base. That is a ceiling from a richer EU market, not a Montenegrin price; use it only to judge whether a quote is within a reasonable range at all.

What drives the price per m²

When you ask for a quote, these seven items change the amount more than anything else:

1. Tile format. Standard format, large format and mosaic are not the same job: large format needs a flat base and two people, mosaic needs time.
2. Preparing the base. Levelling, screed, skim coating: it is charged separately and is often dearer than the tiling itself.
3. Waterproofing. A mandatory item in a bathroom; ask for it with its own area in the quote, because once the tiles are on, you cannot see it.
4. Laying pattern. Diagonal, herringbone and straight-joint laying are not priced the same.
5. Cutting and waste. Small rooms with lots of corners mean more cuts; ask what percentage of waste they allow for when ordering the tiles.
6. Height and access. Walls up to the ceiling, stairwells, a floor without a lift.
7. Who buys the materials. If the contractor does, tradespeople say themselves that they add 10–20% to the retail price.

How many tilers there are at all

This is the figure that also explains the absence of price lists. On 24.09.2026 the tiling category on the platform had three registered professionals for the whole country, one each in Podgorica, Budva and Tivat.

At the same time, in Podgorica four contractors offer complete bathrooms, and there is one tiler. That is the most concrete bottleneck we have measured in the whole home-renovation chain: the plumber finishes the rough stage, and the job stands still until the tiler is free.

More broadly: of the 86 categories we cover, 60 have exactly one professional. Where there is a single supplier, nobody has a reason to publish a price list, and that is most likely the whole explanation for why this query has no answer online.

How many tiles to order: the sum people most often get wrong

Before any quote you need the exact area, and this is where people go wrong twice.

First mistake: measuring the floor instead of the walls. A bathroom with 4 m² of floor can easily have 18–22 m² of wall up to the ceiling. A quote that refers to "a 4-square-metre bathroom" and a quote that says "22 m² of wall and 4 m² of floor" are not the same job, and the difference in the amount is several times over.

Second mistake: waste. Cutting, corners, diagonal laying and large format all need a reserve. Tradespeople usually count it as a percentage of extra tiles ordered, and more for more complex patterns. Agree in advance who bears the cost if the material runs out halfway through; that is the most common cause of delays, because the same batch of tiles may not be available two weeks later.

In practice: measure the walls and the floor separately, note the height to the ceiling, and send those figures with two photos of the room. The difference between a quote based on figures and one given over the phone is that the first can be compared.

How to ask for a quote you can compare

Send the same text to three tilers and ask for the items to be listed separately:

• Wall and floor area separately (not the size of the flat).
• The tile format and type you have in mind, at least roughly.
• Preparing the base: whether it is included and at what price.
• Waterproofing as a separate item with its area.
• Who buys the tiles, adhesive and grout, and how much waste they allow for.
• Timing and sequence: when they can start and how long it takes.
• A fiscal receipt. The electronic fiscalisation system is run by the Tax Administration; without a receipt you have nothing to fall back on if the grout cracks or the waterproofing leaks.
