Shipping Furniture and Household Goods to Montenegro: Methods, Distances, Customs

"Shipping furniture to Montenegro" returns nothing in Google's suggestions. People search instead for removals to montenegro and shipping container to montenegro, and above all for moving to montenegro from the UK, from the USA, from Canada and from Australia. Russian speakers type перевозка вещей в черногорию, often followed by из россии or из москвы. We checked all of these on 24 September 2026.

What those searches have in common is that there is no single Montenegrin removal market to find. A move here is assembled from three pieces: a carrier where you are now, a customs procedure at the border, and people to unload and carry at the other end. This guide takes the three in order.

Four ways to move your things

How far it really is

We ran ten common starting points through the OpenStreetMap routing engine on 24 September 2026. These are car figures, without stops, ferries or border queues:

A removal lorry is slower than a car, and its driver has a limit. Under the EU rules on driving time and rest periods, a driver may not drive more than 9 hours a day, extended to 10 hours twice a week, with a break of at least 45 minutes after 4½ hours. So a single driver from London needs at least three driving days, and one from Berlin or Warsaw at least two, before any waiting at borders. Montenegro is outside the EU, so everything you bring crosses a customs border.

When a carrier promises a date, ask how many drivers the lorry has and how many stops it makes on the way.

Customs: what the Customs Administration says

The Montenegrin Customs Administration answers this question in the FAQ on its information portal. According to that FAQ, household items that people bring in when moving to Montenegro are exempt from customs duty if:

• the person lived continuously in another country for at least 12 months before the move;
• the items belong to that person and were used for at least six months before the move;
• the items are imported within 12 months of registering residence in Montenegro (this can be extended on a reasoned, documented request).

Household items include things for furnishing a home, as well as bicycles, motorcycles, private cars and their trailers, caravans and leisure boats. Alcohol and tobacco are not household items. The same conditions give an exemption from VAT.

The request goes to the customs office responsible for your place of residence, with three attachments: a certificate from a Montenegrin embassy or consulate, or another document proving the 12 months abroad; proof of registered residence or an approved stay; and a list of the items with proof that you owned and used them abroad for at least six months.

One condition surprises people. Goods released under this exemption stay under customs supervision for 12 months. In that time they may not be sold, lent, rented out or pledged without first telling the customs office and paying the duty.

This is the administration's summary, not legal advice. The regulation and your own case decide, and the exemption depends on your residence status, so settle that before the lorry sets off.

The Montenegrin end

Somebody has to unload, carry and assemble, often up stairs in a building without a lift. On 24 September 2026, two verified profiles on Glatko list international moving, one in Herceg Novi and one in Podgorica, and one Podgorica profile offers packing and storage. Nobody on the platform yet lists customs clearance, and no moving request has come in so far. Customs formalities are usually handled by a customs agent (špediter), so ask your carrier at the start whether one is included in the quote.
