Decision 1: what actually gets on the lorry

A UK-to-Montenegro removal is roughly 2,000 km of road, and freight is priced by volume. That makes the calculation simple and unsentimental: anything you can replace locally for less than its freight cost should be sold before you go.

What is worth shipping: documents, tools, anything with sentimental value, specialist equipment, and good beds. What usually is not: mid-range sofas, wardrobes, white goods — with one Montenegro-specific caveat below.

The caveat is electrics. Montenegro uses 230 V at 50 Hz with European Type F sockets, so UK appliances work with an adaptor but every plug becomes a small annoyance, and anything hard-wired needs an electrician. Shipping a kitchen full of UK-plug appliances usually costs more in adaptors and irritation than replacing the two you actually use.

Decision 2: where you land decides which services exist

This is the part no removal firm will tell you. On our platform, on 23 September 2026, the entire moving and settling-in cluster was seven professionals — and they are registered in Podgorica and Herceg Novi only. There is no registered mover in Budva, Kotor, Tivat, Bar or Ulcinj. Four of the seven work in English.

If you are landing on the coast, your movers will travel — which means booking earlier and paying for the journey. If you are landing in the capital, the movers are local but the choice of trades is narrower than Budva's.

Decision 3: the first month, in order

1. Find your plumber and electrician before you need them. Of the 11

professionals in the plumbing cluster, four work in English and three are in Podgorica; plumbers in Podgorica covers rates and what to do at 11pm.

capital has one registered air-conditioning professional and the country has two.

Timing: the coast runs on a different calendar

If you have any flexibility about when the van arrives, use it. Requests on our platform rise towards summer — 2 in April, 11 in May, 12 in June — and urgency is overwhelmingly coastal: eight of nine requests marked "as soon as possible" came from Budva. Tradespeople on the coast report summer prices 50–100% higher between June and September, when holiday-rental turnovers fill their calendars.

The practical window for a UK move that involves any work on the property is therefore October to April: removal dates are easier, tradespeople answer, and you are not competing with an Airbnb changeover for a plumber. A July arrival is perfectly possible — it just means booking the mover a month ahead and postponing anything that is not urgent until autumn.

One more scheduling detail that catches people out: half of the capital's professionals declare a service radius of 100 km or more, which means that in July the Podgorica plumber you were relying on may be working in Budva.

What it costs to make a flat work

UK arrivals consistently underestimate this line. Published Montenegrin prices are thin, but the ones that exist are concrete: interior painting from €1.50/m² including materials — a 60 m² flat has roughly 180–192 m² of wall and ceiling, so about €270–290 in white — and skim coating from €4/m², which can triple the job if the walls need it.

Everything else is quote-based rather than published: of nine painting adverts we counted on a Montenegrin classifieds site, eight carried no price, and two Podgorica plumbing websites published no figures at all. The UK-specific tail you cannot ignore

Two things follow you from Britain.

Customs and the removal paperwork. A household move from a non-EU country into Montenegro involves an inventory and a customs procedure; your removal firm normally handles it, but the responsibility and the timing are yours. Ask, in writing, who files what and what happens if the van waits at the border.

Anything you keep in the UK.
