Nets at Okov

At Okov the search for komarnik returned no screens, so we used the searches insekte (insects) and zaštita od komaraca (mosquito protection), which returned 14 nets and curtains. A Mako insect net of 130x150 cm costs €2.99 in black and white, a Tesa of 150x180 cm with hook-and-loop tape €9.49, and a Mako Single of 8.5x2.2 m €15.99. A Mako two-panel door curtain of 60x210 cm costs €4.59.

Magnetic door screens cost €7.99 for a Biacchi of 120x230 cm, €34.90 for a Tesa of 90x210 cm and €36.90 for a Tesa of 100x220 cm. The Tesa Lamella strip curtain costs €34.90 for 95x220 cm and €44.90 for 120x250 cm, and a Mako net with an aluminium door frame of 100x215 cm €44.90.

Screens at KIPS and nets on Ananas

At KIPS the search for komarnik returned 14 screens, and the search for mreža za komarce three more nets. An aluminium screen for a PVC window costs €24.65 instead of €38.19 for 50x50 cm, €45.29 for 60x60, €54.29 for 60x80, €68.39 for 100x100, €70.19 for 80x120, €77.59 for 100x120, €85.09 for 120x120, €92.49 for 120x140 and 140x120, and €104.29 for 140x140 cm. How to measure and which type to choose

A hook-and-loop net is the cheapest and goes up without drilling, but the tape comes unstuck over time and the net tears easily. A magnetic door net closes by itself after you walk through, so it suits a terrace or entrance. An aluminium framed screen stays on the window for years, but it is bought to exact measurements, so measuring matters most.

Measure the width and height of the opening in several places and take the smallest figure, because walls and joinery are rarely perfectly straight. Check whether the window sash opens inwards and whether the screen gets in the way of a roller shutter or handle. For balcony doors choose a hinged or sliding screen, and for a baby a net over the pram or cot that is pulled taut so the child cannot tug it. What the ECDC says about the tiger mosquito in Montenegro

In its fact sheet on the Aedes albopictus mosquito, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control lists Montenegro among the European countries where this tiger mosquito has been reported. It also states that it is a known vector of chikungunya virus, dengue virus and dirofilariasis, and that it spreads by using artificial water containers as breeding sites.

As personal protection from bites, the ECDC lists bed nets, preferably insecticide-treated, sleeping and resting in screened or air-conditioned rooms, clothes that cover most of the body, and repellent used as the label instructs. So alongside a screen, empty plant pot saucers, buckets and other containers where water stands, because the tiger mosquito also bites by day.

What to check before buying

1. Size: the smallest width and height of the opening.
2. Type: hook-and-loop, magnetic, framed or a roll by the metre.
3. Opening: the screen must not block the sash, shutter or handle.
4. Colour: white, anthracite or brown to match the joinery.
5. Mesh: fibreglass lasts longer than ordinary fabric.

How we measured and what we did not measure

We copied prices from Okov, KIPS and Ananas on the day we read them, with the pre-discount price where shown; the medians are ours. At Okov we removed tapes, traps and insect-killing devices, and at KIPS shade nets, fencing and bird nets. We did not measure how long the nets last in the sun or how well they seal.
