Living in Bar, Montenegro: People, Trains and the Trades You Can Book

"Living in Bar Montenegro" is a live search, and Google completes it with "cost of living in bar montenegro". Around the town itself, people ask is bar montenegro safe, bar vs budva and belgrade to bar montenegro train. Russian speakers type бар или будва для жизни (Bar or Budva for living), and locals search for vodoinstalater bar crna gora (plumber in Bar), električar bar (electrician in Bar) and klima majstor bar (AC technician in Bar). We checked on 24 September 2026.

This guide answers what we can measure: who lives in Bar, how you get around, and which home services you can actually book there. Rents, property prices and the cost of living are for property sites, and we did not measure safety.

Who lives in Bar

Bar municipality had 45,812 residents at the 2023 census, which makes it the most populous municipality on the coast: Herceg Novi has 30,824, Budva 27,445 and Kotor 22,746. The figure covers the whole municipality, including Sutomore and the villages, not only the town.

One resident in six is a foreign citizen. According to MONSTAT's census release on citizenship, 7,534 foreign citizens live in Bar, 16.45% of the population. That is more than twice the national share of 7.52%, though about half of Budva's 31.86%. The largest groups:

Set against the national totals, about one in five Russian citizens counted in Montenegro (2,853 of 13,550) and almost a third of Ukrainian citizens (941 of 3,049) live in Bar municipality.

Bar is also mixed in faith. In the census release on religion, 55.02% of residents declared themselves Orthodox, 31.96% Muslim and 6.11% Catholic. In Budva, 84.26% are Orthodox.

Getting around

The railway from Belgrade ends in Bar, and Bar is the only coastal municipality on it. On the timetable of Montenegro's passenger railway for 24 September 2026, 11 trains left Bar for Podgorica, the first at 05:13 and the last at 21:13. The ride takes 54 minutes to 1 hour 3 minutes, and a ticket costs €2.80 in second class or €4.20 in first. Two direct trains a day continue to Belgrade, at 09:00 and 20:10; the trip takes 10 h 58 min to 11 h 17 min and costs €23.80 or €35.60.

By road, the neighbours are close:

• Ulcinj: 26 km, about 34 minutes;
• Budva: 39 km, about 59 minutes;
• Podgorica: 52 km, about 63 minutes, so the train is about as fast as the car.

Searches for a ferry to Italy are common as well. The Bar shipping company's website links to a Bar–Bari passenger line, but that page did not open when we checked on 24 September 2026, so confirm sailings directly before you plan around them.

What you can book in Bar itself

On 24 September 2026 the platform had four verified professionals based in Bar, covering 13 service categories:

• a cleaning service: regular and window cleaning, cleaning after building work, holiday-let turnovers, villas and charter boats; it works in Russian, Montenegrin and English and lists €10–15 an hour;
• a Russian-speaking renovation professional: tiles, painting and plumbing, with 15 years of declared experience;
• a waterproofing company;
• an AC deep-cleaning specialist working in English, at €30 per unit.

Two of the four work in English and two in Russian. What Bar does not have on the platform is just as telling: no electrician, no mover and nobody who installs air conditioning, only AC cleaning. The local searches point at the same gaps: električar bar, klima majstor bar and majstor za masine bar (washing-machine repair in Bar) are all live.

Who comes to Bar from elsewhere

Bar's own list is not the whole picture, because professionals in other towns declare how far they travel. We compared each declared service radius with the road distance to Bar: 14 professionals based elsewhere reach Bar, nine from Podgorica, two from Budva, two from Herceg Novi and one from Berane. Together with the four in town, they cover 49 categories.

That is where most of the gaps close:

• Electrics: four Podgorica electricians declare a radius of 100 to 115 km.
• Moving: a removals professional from Herceg Novi covers 200 km, and one in Podgorica offers packing and storage. Our guide to moving within Montenegro explains how local moves are priced.
• Kitchens and bathrooms: four renovation professionals, all from Podgorica.

Two categories stay empty even with the neighbours counted: nobody installs air conditioning in Bar, and nobody does rough construction such as earthworks. A radius is the professional's own statement, so ask whether travel is included in the price.

What happened to Bar's requests

Two requests have come from Bar so far: a painter on 3 May 2026, written in Montenegrin, and a concrete deck extension with earth removal on 29 May 2026, written in English. Both expired without a single quote. On 3 May no verified painter on the platform covered Bar; on 29 May nobody covered earthworks there, and nobody does yet.

Painting has been filled since then: the Bar-based renovation professional and two professionals from Podgorica now cover it. Earthworks and AC installation remain open on the platform.

Bar or Budva?

Type "bar vs" into Google and "bar vs budva" is the first suggestion. For living rather than visiting, here is what we can measure, with Podgorica for scale:

Bar has two-thirds more residents than Budva but less than a third of its registered professionals. Budva is the service hub of the coast; Bar leans on Podgorica, which is one train ride away. The one measure on which Bar matches Budva is Russian: two professionals work in Russian in each town. Who Bar suits

• People who travel to Podgorica often. Eleven trains a day, from €2.80 each way.
• Russian speakers. Two of the four local professionals work in Russian, and 2,853 Russian citizens live in the municipality.
• Holiday-let and boat owners. The local cleaning service covers turnovers, villas and charter boats; see the home cleaning category.

Rents, property prices, the cost of living and safety are outside this guide, and so are schools and healthcare. The platform numbers are small (four professionals and two requests in Bar) and describe one platform, not the town's whole economy.
