At Okov the searches for ašov, motika and lopata returned 15 tools. A hardened pointed Slovakia Trend spade with a T handle costs €9.99, and the Struc Herkules of 290x200 mm €11.90 without a handle and €16.99 with a 1000 mm handle. A forged hoe costs €10.99, and a Dolenjska hoe €9.99 without a handle and €16.90 with one.
Ordinary shovels cost from €4.49 for hardened and universal ones without a handle to €19.90 for a pointed one with a handle, while a universal shovel with a handle costs €15.99 and a folding Verto €13.49. A Viga Tool Holland rolled shovel with a short handle costs €43.90.

Shovels cost from €5.95 for a stable shovel to €17.50 for a Truper with a fibreglass handle, and a Maurer aluminium shovel €14.88.
What to use for which job
A spade with a flat blade is for turning soil, digging over beds and cutting turf, while a pointed one goes more easily into hard, stony ground. A shovel is for moving soil, sand and gravel, and a pointed one picks up loose material more easily. A hoe with a wide blade is for hoeing and pulling weeds, a narrow hoe and a mattock for hard ground and roots, and a hoe with prongs loosens the soil around plants.
A tread on a spade saves your sole and lets you press the blade in with your full weight, and a hardened blade stays sharp longer. The handle should suit your height, and the joint between blade and handle should not slip. Clean soil off the tools after work and store them somewhere dry. What the WHO says about tetanus and soil
In its fact sheet on tetanus of 15 July 2026, the World Health Organization states that tetanus is acquired when spores of the bacterium Clostridium tetani enter a cut or wound, that the spores are found everywhere in the environment, particularly in soil, ash and animal faeces and on rusty tools, and that they survive for years. Tetanus is not transmitted from person to person, and the incubation period lasts from 3 to 21 days, most often up to 14 days.
For protection throughout life, the WHO recommends 6 doses of vaccine, 3 primary and 3 booster doses. So wear gloves and sturdy footwear when digging, rinse and clean any wound from a tool well, and if you are not sure you are vaccinated, see a doctor.
