So people search for a can for flowers or the garden, an exact capacity and ideas for making one themselves.

At Okov the searches for kanta za zalivanje, zalivanje and kantica za zalivanje returned six cans. Di Martino cans cost €3.99 for 2 l, €5.49 for 5 l, €7.59 for 8 l and €9.99 for 12 l. Lifetime Garden flower cans with a handle cost €5.99 instead of €7.99 and €6.89.
Alongside cans Okov also sells a pot watering dispenser with two nozzles at €6.49, a Gardena Classic spray gun at €20.49, a Bradas Spring Flex set with a 15 m coiled hose at €27.90 and a garden watering set at €79.90.
Cans at KIPS and on Ananas
At KIPS the search for zalivanje returned eight watering cans. The 1.5 l Gifarre costs €2.20, the 1.5 l Eos €2.90, and the Spring €4.30 for 3 l, €5.70 for 5 l, €7.20 for 8 l, €8.50 for 10 l and €10.50 for 14 l.
On Ananas the search for kanta za zalivanje returned 12 offers. Ananas Shop cans cost €3.50 for 1.5 l, €4.20 for 2 l, €8.50 for a green or orange metal 3 l can, €14 for 5 l and €25 for 8 l. The Bormann costs €7.80 for 3 l and €14.83 for 12 l, the 17 l Papillon €11.60, the 1.1 l stainless Progarden €6.20, and the 0.9 and 1.5 l Aberto Design designer cans €10.50 and €11.60.
Which capacity to choose
For a few balcony pots a 1 to 2 litre can with a long, narrow spout is enough, reaching the roots without spilling. For a terrace with larger pots and a small garden a 5 to 8 litre can is better, while a can of 10 litres or more is heavy when full, so carry it half full if your back hurts. A rose, the sprinkler head on the spout, spreads the water gently, so it is good for seedlings and young plants.
A plastic can is light and cheap, but over time it fades and turns brittle in the sun, while metal and stainless ones last longer and look good on a terrace. Empty the can after use and turn it upside down so algae and mosquitoes do not develop in it. For a larger garden a can does not replace a hose or drip irrigation. Water early in the morning or in the evening, when less water evaporates, and water the soil around the plant rather than the leaves, because wet leaves fall ill more easily in strong sun.
What the EU requires when a can is used to apply a plant protection product
In Article 13, Directive 2009/128/EC on the sustainable use of pesticides requires that handling, dilution and mixing of pesticides, disposal of remnants and cleaning of equipment after application do not endanger human health or the environment. For products intended for non-professional users, states should prevent dangerous handling, for example with low-toxicity products, ready-to-use formulations and smaller packs.
Montenegro is not an EU member, but if you dilute a plant protection product or fertiliser in a can, keep a separate can for it, label it and never use it for drinking or for watering vegetables before harvest. Do not pour leftover solution into a drain or near a well.

We copied prices from Okov, KIPS and Ananas on the day we read them, with the pre-discount price where shown; the medians are ours. At Okov we merged three searches and removed waste bins and oil cans, and at KIPS we used the search zalivanje, because kanta za zalivanje returned waste bins and mortar tubs. We did not measure how long cans last in the sun.
